Used Electric Mobility Scooters
When deciding upon a used mobility scooter it is important to know the “background “of the device…
How old is it? That is a good question but not necessarily the number one. Being as scooters run on battery power, electronics should be your first concern.
Mobility Scooter Batteries are meant to be charged and used daily!
When that process is disrupted the battery life will diminish and eventually go bad. A good practice with any battery operated device including scooters is to “fully charge” and then “fully use” the battery capacity. This will “train” the battery so to say.

With that being said when looking into the purchase of a mobility scooter those that have sat in a garage for six months after little use are still good candidates for purchase. Just expect to replace the gel battery at a cost between
$100.00 to $200.00 depending on product.
A scooter that was used six months or less is practically new if not better.
Most of the kinks if any that would appear on a new scooter would be caught right away and sent in for warranty work. This gives you an advantage in the scooter market. You are able to purchase more scooter for your money.
Check your tires! If a scooter was used excessively the tires will show some wear in the tread. To the point of “uneven wear” or “no tread at all”.
Check the Controls! Make sure they fit snugly and are not missing any pieces and operating the way they should.
Take it for a test ride if possible. There is no better way to know how a product feels than to use it as intended. Feel for yourself the comfort and maneuvering ability. Determine then if it will make it through the hall to the kitchen.
Does it have the power to take you up an incline?
Another area of concern when purchasing second hand is where the scooter has been stored. If it has been stored indoors out of the humidity that is better than outside. Not to say it happens to all but the humidity and moisture that may be present does not do good things to the electronics. Mostly the braking systems. When excessive moisture builds up it will have a tendency to rust important parts of friction causing the brakes to fail, possibly lock or cause a “jerky” stop.
Most importantly when shopping for a used mobility scooter it is always best to buy a name brand product. This is the chance to buy top of the line products for a fraction of their value. There are companies in China producing these scooters and selling them cheap. Support or replacement parts will be hard to find. Name Brand Companies here in America produce quality products with plenty of local support should you need it.
